Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen, Denmark

August 31, 2012 – Copenhagen is the first stop on our three country tour. The Copenhagen airport (Location) is very nice with real wooden floors and Danish furniture everywhere (not surprising but nice). To get here, we drove from Ottawa to P.E. Trudeau Airport in Montreal, flew from Montreal to Heathrow Airport in London and then flew from Heathrow to Copenhagen. Transfer times were a bit tight due to an hour delay leaving Montreal. Signs in the airport were in English and Danish so no need for the Berlitz European Phrase Book yet :-). Continue reading

Dining at the Canal Ritz

Dining at the Canal Ritz

My brother and I had had a nice visit with my father in the nursing home. After a bit of discussion our next destination became the Rideau Canal. Being the visitor, he got the co-pilot seat while I got to sit in the back and enjoy a bit of photographing as we drove along the Queensway. Harvesting on the NCC land was underway. Continue reading

Town of Roskilde, Denmark

Town of Roskilde, Denmark (Location)

We had caught a train from Copenhagen in the morning and were now in the town of Roskilde, Denmark. It is a neat little town that we walked through to get to our primary destination – the Viking Ship Museum. It has a quiet European town feel and apparently at least one vintage car.

Viking Ship Museum – Roskilde

Viking Ship Museum – Roskilde

After spending a day in Copenhagen checking out the sites and visiting the Carlsberg Brewery, we jumped on a train to Roskilde to visit the Viking Ship Museum (Vikingeskibsmuseet). (Location)

In 1962, five Viking ships were uncovered in the mud at the bottom of the Roskilde Fjord near Skuldelev, Denmark.  Therefore, this year, 2012, the Viking Ship Museum is celebrating the 50th anniversary of that discovery.  Very interesting place to visit. Continue reading

Carlsberg Brewery – Copenhagen

Carlsberg Brewery – Copenhagen

After a rather long walk away from the city center of Copenhagen (I’d suggest a Metro in hind-sight), we arrived at the Carlsberg Brewery.

There are several structures around the brewery and two main entrances, one which is shown above and the other know as the elephant gate. Continue reading

Mermaids of Denmark

Mermaids of Denmark

“The Little Mermaid” Sculpture is based on the fairytale of the same name written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen and it would appear that the whole country (or at least Copenhagen) has fallen in love with Mermaids and have various statues around the town to showcase this mermaid.

First thing we did, once we found our hostel, was to set out on foot and walk to the shore of the main canal in the city where the famous “Little Mermaid” Statue sits out on the rocks. (Location) Continue reading

Ottawa to Montreal before flight to Denmark

Ottawa to Montreal before flight to Denmark

Once Graeme and his brother, Alan, decided to fly to Denmark on a flight out of Montreal, the question then became how to get to Montreal from Ottawa. There are plenty of options. Although not always the case, from past experience the most expensive option is usually to get a connecting flight from Ottawa International Airport. Usually, the cost of this option is a determining factor but, since travelers need to be at the airport early to get through security screening, etc., time can also become a factor especially since airlines won’t book connecting flights unless there is adequate time (big buffer) at the Montreal end to transfer both luggage and passengers to the international flight.Winter weather also plays into the equation but in the summer is not normally a determining factor.
