Mer Bleue – A Summer Visit

Mer Bleue – A Summer Visit

We had a few tasks that needed to be attended to in the east end of the city but had them out of the way earlier than expected and ended up having a bit of breakfast in the Orleans Mall. Not gourmet breakfast but we didn’t want much!

The Winter Quiet of Mer Bleue, Ottawa, Ontario

The Winter Quiet of Mer Bleue, Ottawa, Ontario

Wednesday was one of those heavily overcast, foggy, misty kind of days with the temperature hovering around the freezing point. I was on the east side of Ottawa on other business and, since I had decided to bring my camera along with me, I used photography as my good excuse to take a walk in the area of the Mer Bleue Bog. (location)  The only sound I heard for about an hour was the sound of a few planes heading to the airport and even those sounds were nicely muted.

Chasing Rainbows and Pots of Gold – Ridge Road, Ottawa

Chasing Rainbows and Pots of Gold – Ridge Road, Ottawa

After photographing Chickadees in Nepean, I headed east toward Mer Bleue Bog. It was one of those strange days weatherwise, a bit of sun, a lot of clouds, intermittent rain and a strong wind was blowing the flags around

Looking off to the east, I kept seeing rainbows coming and going, brightening for a while and then disappearing altogether until another cloud and rain shower lined up with the bit of sun peeping through to develop another prism effect. I was approaching Ridge Road when I got an open view of a new rainbow just forming. It disappeared almost as quickly as it formed but I was able to get my camera out for a quick shot.

Mer Bleue Bog, Ottawa, Ontario

It was very foggy when I left my home and headed east across the city to Mer Bleue Bog (Location). I was rather hoping that I would get there and be able to photograph some spooky scenes befitting a howling Hounds of the Baskerville type of scenario but by the time that I got to the bog, the fog had lifted and a blue sky was trying to replace the earlier overcast skies. Most of the vegetation was still green, but the Staghorn Sumac was displaying its red Fall colours quite admirably.

At the end of the Ridge Road, there is a small picnic area and access to a 1.2 km boardwalk out over the bog area. When I reached the picnic area, two young girls were busy admiring a Monarch Butterfly which was sitting on the grass drying its wings after the condensation of the morning fog dampened everything just a bit.

Mer Bleue Conservation Area, Ottawa, Ontario

Mer Bleue Conservation Area, Ottawa, Ontario

Mer Bleue Conservation Area is on the east edge of Ottawa, Ontario and consists of a large bog bounded by sand ridges (Location). The plant life of the bog area is unique in that it must be capable of surviving in limited nutrient acidic environment and resembles the Boreal forest type of vegetation found much further north. The National Capital Commission maintains a boardwalk through part of the bog allowing close-up examination of the plant life that lives further out in the bog.

At one point, the boardwalk passes through a small clump of tamaracks where the undergrowth is primarily Labrador Tea shrubs and blueberry shrubs.

Pines atop the adjacent sand ridge.
