Spring storm hits Ontario

April 23, 2012 – Woke up this morning to heavily overcast skies, took a look out the window, and, like the weather forecasting groundhog, decided that it might be better to get back under the covers.  Continue reading

Wind! Wildlife! Hockey!

Wind!Lots of Wind! Wildlife! Hockey!
I didn’t have much exciting planned this afternoon when I opened the door and headed out to my car with my camera equipment. I thought that I might like to head to the Experimental Farm and photograph the Magnolias and other flowering trees. Then the wind and heat hit me right in the face. +26C or higher and wind gusts forecast in the 60kph- 90kph range! Continue reading

Fletcher Wildlife Garden/Jardin Écologique Fletcher, Ottawa Ontario

Fletcher Wildlife Garden/Jardin Écologique Fletcher, Ottawa Ontario (Location)

This AM, I had started off before sunrise driving to the airport so that my wife could catch a flight to Winnipeg. On the way home, I stopped first at Hogs Back Falls and then headed over to Fletcher Wildlife Garden to stretch my legs a bit and see what wildlife might want to come out to pose for my camera. Hog’s Back Falls/Les Chutes De Hogs Back, Ottawa, Ontario

Hog’s Back Falls/Les Chutes De Hogs Back, Ottawa, Ontario (Location)

The morning had started pretty early for me since Adell was taking an early morning flight to Winnipeg and that meant driving her to the airport for about 5:30AM. I knew from publications of the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) and from seeing the water levels of the Jock River for the recent Jock River Canoe-Kayak race that water levels in the Rideau River waterway were lower than normal for this time of the year. There had also been a bit of discussion in recent newscasts about the impact of recent budget cuts on the timing of the opening of the Rideau Canal. Since I was already up bright and early and driving around, I decided that it would be as good as time as any to head over to Hog’s Back Falls and see what impact the water levels were having on the appearance of that bit of the Rideau River. Rideau Trail – Marlborough Forest – Cedar Grove Walking Trail

Rideau Trail – Marlborough Forest – Cedar Grove Walking Trail

Today the weather looked very promising so we planned a little outing to part of the Rideau Trail that passe through the Marlborough Forest.  The Rideau Trail itself runs from Ottawa to the Kingston area through a variety of landscapes with some areas being flat and boggy, other areas being mixed farmland and other areas catching part of the granite outcroppings of the lower edges of the Canadian Shield. The small part that we were visiting today was of the boggy cedar grove nature.

Just a short trip … really!

Just a short trip … really!

I was working on some more uploads from our recent Cuba trip, looked out the window, saw that the sun was shining and decided that a short trip around the neighborhood with camera in hand would be good idea. Started out as  a trip to the Jack Pine Trail because I hadn’t been there for awhile.  Never got there.  Continue reading

2012 Jock River Canoe and Kayak Race, Richmond, Ontario

March 31, 2012 – I visited the Jock River Race official site (http://www.jockriverrace.ca/) again today. I knew that they have decided that the lack of snow cover and no ensuing rainfall to speak of had forced them to move the date for the race ahead to today’s date. No indication this morning that the race might have been canceled so I’m off with my camera to see what interesting action I might be able to capture again this year.
