The Porte Dorée Aquarium – Paris, France

The Porte Dorée Aquarium – Paris, France

The Porte Dorée Aquarium - Paris, FranceThe Porte Dorée Aquarium is part of the Palais de la Porte Dorée complex and is quite large It is easily reached from Central Paris via the subway system. You get off the subway at the Porte Dorée station. My initial interest was in visiting the large park surrounding Lac Daumesnil which is across the street from the Porte Dorée Aquarium. Both are a reasonable short walk from the subway station. It is probably easy to get a cab or bus from the subway to the park or the aquarium but I just walked.

Although I found many things in the exhibits to interest me, the large Humphead Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) was the creature that got most of my attention. The aquarium has named their specimen “Napoleon”. “Napoleon” is a wrasse from the Indo-Pacific region. Males of the species reach 6 feet in length, females somewhat smaller. Colour in these images is real, not photoshopped!

Once I got past the thrill and enjoyment of seeing and photographing “Napoleon, I turned my attention to other exhibits.  The saltwater marine exhibits are generally more brightly lit than most of the freshwater exhibits so the SW exhibits tended to get more of my attention than the FW exhibits.

The size and colour of some of the other marine display inhabitants was quite spectacular.

Lac Daumesnil, Paris, France

Lac Daumesnil, Paris, France

Located a short walk from the Porte Dorée Station, this lake and its surrounding parkland provides a nice diversion. A little rowboat ferry service and boat rental operates at one end of Lac Dausmesnil in case you don’t feel like walking back to the bridge at the other end of the island.

After a bit of relaxation lying on the grass beside the lake, I headed back toward the subway station and visited the Porte Dorée Aquarium which was close to Lac Daumesnil.

Paris, France

Paris – getting there was half the fun or at least it should have been 🙁 . Unfortunately, the day of our flight, there was a switch to daylight saving time zone or some such occurrence and the North American airlines forgot to tell the European Airlines. The result, flight schedules didn’t match and the wild scramble at the airports to re-book flights, shuffle passengers onto other airlines, re-book connecting flights many miles away by standing in airport queues, etc., just to get across the ocean and then redo the whole process once on the ground in Europe, began in earnest. I realized fairly quickly what had happened with our flight arrangements and rushed to start the re-booking process to make sure that we had a connecting flight booked when we eventually got across the Atlantic. The easy part was estimating that we would be one hour later in arriving. The more difficult part was booking without knowing the schedules or what complications we might encounter on the other side of the Atlantic. I was able to get connecting flights booked so ended up in Paris only an hour or two later than planned. I can assume that others were not so lucky.
