Connemara Countryside – Republic of Ireland

The quintessential Irish landscape, endless rolling hills of green. It feels like we drove through the region for hours but with every new bend in the road was another breathtaking view. In a way it was good I was on a bus I didn’t control or I would of stopped over a dozen times in the first hour alone. But words can’t describe how beautiful this area in western Ireland is… and the photos barely do it service as well!

Its just so majestic, the landscape… not me 😛

Mid-way through our travels in Connemara we came across a small village nestled beside a shallow wide river. Here was our afternoon stop where we could try Irish Coffee or Hot Chocolate (both being mixed with Irish cream). I went with the coco and it was amazing.

Gaynor’s is our afternoon stop for a hot beverage!

The Gaynor’s field bar itself was pleasant nook which had a faint smell of smoke from the fire place and was full of locals in addition to the odd tourist that had stopped like us to grab a nip and use the facilities.

A final group image as we leave the Connemara Countryside, definitely making the “return” list.

Breeding Bird Surveys (2013) – Day 4

Breeding Bird Surveys (2013) – Day 4 – June 6, 2013

RON_3489-Sunrise

Today’s route was a two-part route with the approximate half-way point being the small town of White River, Ontario (Winnie-the-Pooh town). The first half of the route was new to us so we had scouted out the route the night before and found that the gravel road was in good condition with no washouts, a great improvement over the gravel road conditions of the survey route of the day before. As we arrived at the starting point for today’s survey, the mist hung heavy over the silent waters of the lakes, ponds and valleys along the route. Soon after our survey began, the rising sun began to paint the sky in a broad assortment of colours and, with each turn in the road, the sky changed the show for the beginning of a new day. Nirvana is a nice dark sky zone known to Members of RASC where one can go for astronomy. That weekend there were over 9 of us out there, from planetary observers to DSO (deep space objects). Even one expert who spent the entire astronomical night watching meteors plummet to the earth.

Earth Shine and the Waxing Crescent Moon

Earth Shine and the Moon

The Supermoon arrived on time :-).

Standing by the side of the road waiting for the supermoon to rise.

Graeme and I discussed where the moon would rise and decided that we might have a nice clear shot from the hill by the campground looking out to the east over the Ottawa skyline. As we crested the hill, we came upon a wonderful collection of individuals, tripods and cameras and many cars parked on the side of the road. I guess we weren’t the only ones with the same idea :-).
