Old Quarry Trail, Kanata

Old Quarry Trail, Kanata (Location)

Nice temperatures and a perfect blue sky was all that I needed to head over to the Old Quarry Trail by the Hazeldean Mall with carrots in one pocket and sunflower seeds in the other pocket.

Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario – a second visit.

Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario – a second visit.
Driving from Ottawa to the Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg, Ontario, Jeremy and I opted to take the more leisurely route along the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Jeremy and I formed the Flickr Ottawa group of two for this outing. Weather conditions and last minute Christmas commitments had whittled the group size down quickly.

We found Mr. And Mrs. Claus in a parking lot in Cardinal, Ontario. A jolly couple, but apparently Santa wasn’t sure where he had parked his reindeer. They seemed confident that their transportation would be found, so off Jeremy and I went to see the lights of Upper Canada Village.

Ottawa to Morrisburg – a bit of snow and a few stops

Ottawa to Morrisburg – a bit of snow and a few stops
The weather forecast said that the weather would be nice in Morrisburg so when Jeremy and I left Ottawa we weren’t expecting to encounter any tough sledding during the drive to get there. Mother Nature decided to test us a bit with a bit of a snow squall when we approached the junction of the 416 and the 401 highways. We decided to avoid the 401 and take the more leisurely route along the shores of the St. Lawrence River, stopping for a few photo breaks along the way. I was happy that the snow squall didn’t follow us and we were soon away from the adverse weather.

New Year’s Eve and Fireworks

New Year’s Eve and Fireworks

At this time of the year people begin to ask us how to take pictures of fireworks. There is probably some perfect way to do it but we’re not completely sure what that way is. Instead of a perfect formula, we’ve developed a short tutorial outlining what we do and think about to get the fireworks shots that we get. To view the tutorial, click on “tutorials” at the top of the page or click here: Fireworks Tutorial.

More Deer Photos – Old Quarry Trail, Kanata, Ontario

More Deer Photos – Old Quarry Trail, Kanata, Ontario

I’ve started off today’s blog with a photo of a young fellow trying to feed a number of white-tailed deer which came in quite close but, in the end, ate from the ground but not from his hand. I told him that he and the deer would be on the internet tonight so I had to get to work on this blog as soon as I got home :-).

Potential for a White Christmas is now HIGH!

Snowfall over the past few days has now all but assured us of a White Christmas. My backyard table recording system says so :-).

Deer on the Old Quarry Trail – Kanata, Ontario

Deer on the Old Quarry Trail – Kanata, Ontario

It was -8C, a light wind was blowing, a few flakes of snow were falling and the deer were there to greet me as I took a brisk walk around the Old Quarry Trail loop of Ottawa’s Greenbelt trail system.

Chickadees and More – Sarsaparilla Trail – Bell’s Corners, Ottawa

The Chickadees were hungry today and quickly cleaned out my supply of black sunflower seeds. Didn’t take long before two fellows came along the trail and these two fellows were even nicer than I was – their seeds were already shelled :-).

Another Snow-free Fall day – Kanata/Nepean, Ontario

Another Snow-free Fall day – Kanata/Nepean, Ontario

It was a nice day (-3C) to be outside in the fresh air as long as you found a bit of shelter from the wind. Unlike other parts of North America, the area around Ottawa has escaped any serious snowfall (so far!). Had a good rainfall this week though, so lots of puddles with coatings of ice and interesting ice patterns.

As I was driving along one of my unmaintained trails, I came to a spot where the rain had flooded a bit of the rutted road and decided to turn back. Couldn’t trust that the frost had firmed up the spot enough and certainly didn’t want to walk a mile to the nearest farmhouse!
