Commerce and trade with Cuba – my observations on the future of this island nation.
Educationally, I hold an MBA degree in Finance and Marketing. I’m retired from the normal working world. Now, I carry a camera around with me and use it to record what I see. As I do so, my educational background has an impact on how I spend some of my vacation time and also, from time to time, influences where I point my camera.
What impact did my educational background have on my vacation activities during my recent visit to Cuba? Continue reading →

During our visit to Varadero, Cuba I didn’t see all of the species of birds, reptiles and plants that were there and photographed even fewer species. Many of the species have been included in other blog entries as part of the day’s story. Others didn’t fit elsewhere. This blog entry will serve as a collection point of images of the various species that I photographed. Where I have included the image in another blog, clicking on the image will take you to that blog entry.
Our pick-up for the flight home was scheduled for pretty early in the morning so we were up before sunrise. We were supposed to have a wake-up call, breakfast delivered to our room and porter service to get our bags from our room to the pick-up point. Somehow we ended up with none of the above services so somewhere along the way the time or the room number got mixed up. Perhaps someone else got a knock on their door at 6AM and had an unexpected breakfast in bed or …??? Anyway, we were up in time and waiting when the bus arrived to take us to the airport. Nightly Stage Show – Barcelo Marina Palace – Varadera, Cuba
Each night, the resort’s auditorium was filled to capacity for the nightly stage show. We had gone to a few of them and this particular evening I was outside the building taking some night shots when I decided to head over to the stage area to see if I might be able to catch the last of the evening’s performance. Barcelo Premium-Marina Palace, Varadero, Cuba
Barcelo Premium – Cayo Libertad-Royal Island, Varadero, Cuba
We were staying at the adult-only island complex referred to as Barcelo Cayo Libertad or the Royal Island. Barcelo Cayo Libertad occupies an island at the extreme end of the Varadero Peninsula approximately 24 km from the town of Varadero itself. Guests at Barcelo Cayo Libertad have full access to the facilities of the larger Barcelo Marina Palace complex. Continue reading →
Looking out over the Barcelo Premium Marina Palace Resort – Varadero, Cuba
It felt like a great day for a bit of a climb so I took my Nikon D300 and my 10.5mm fisheye lens up to the top of the look-out tower and enjoyed the view and the photo opportunities. The above image shows the Music Room (Disco) mid left, the marina construction top center, and the main reception area top right. Continue reading →
El Otro Varadero …. The Other Varadero – Varahicacos Ecological Reserve
We had traveled into the town of Varadero and done the tourist shopping thing already so today the plan was to visit the Varahicacos Ecological Reserve on Varadero Peninsula. In stark contrast to the manicured lawns of the surrounding resort complexes, this bit of preserved natural habitat in the middle of the Varadero Peninsula offered us a look at “El Otro Varadero … the Other Varadero”. Unlike the blue sky days we had enjoyed so far, today offered a change in weather and the possibilities of a few rain showers. I had traveled into Varadero the day before for a bit of a sightseeing tour but today Adell and I had planned to go into Varadero for a bit of window shopping and perhaps a bit of souvenir hunting. The plan was simple – go early, come back early, so despite the possibility of rain, we headed over to the bus stop to await the arrival of the Varadero Beach Tour double-decker bus. While we waited for the bus, I kept myself busy photographing some of the local construction activity. Continue reading →
