Christmas Lights – Just thinking

Hallowe’en is barely out of the way and now people are beginning to think about how they are going to decorate the outside of the house for the next season of festive lighting. My favorite spot to visit, if I am in Toronto in December, is 165 Benjamin Boake Trail where the DeSario family start in October each year to cover every imaginable part of their house and front yard with twinkling bulbs and animated themes. Click on the images below to go to various Christmas light blog entries (lots of images of lights).

Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, Ontario

Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, Ontario (Location)

We had some visitors from the U.S earlier this week so spent some time visiting the Upper Canada Village located between Cornwall, Ontario and Morrisburg, Ontario. I have been there a few times in recent years photographing the seasonal lights but this was the first time in quite a while that I had visited the village in daylight hours without snow on the ground. (Previous Upper Canada Village posts)

In the past year, the new entrance has been completed and provides access to the Village properties as well as to a new museum-style group of displays. This year, the displays focus heavily on the events of the war of 1812-14 which impacted this area directly when the Americans crossed the St. Lawrence River and battled with the locals, the natives and the British at Crysler Farm. The village itself reflects a period of time closer to the mid 1800’s but with this being the bicentennial of the War of 1812-14  Canada and with the Fall of 1813 marking the bicentennial of the actual battles at Crysler Farm, there is more than a normal emphasis on the events of the 1812-14 period. Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario – a second visit.

Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario – a second visit.
Driving from Ottawa to the Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg, Ontario, Jeremy and I opted to take the more leisurely route along the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Jeremy and I formed the Flickr Ottawa group of two for this outing. Weather conditions and last minute Christmas commitments had whittled the group size down quickly.

We found Mr. And Mrs. Claus in a parking lot in Cardinal, Ontario. A jolly couple, but apparently Santa wasn’t sure where he had parked his reindeer. They seemed confident that their transportation would be found, so off Jeremy and I went to see the lights of Upper Canada Village.

More gingerbread creations – Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario

More gingerbread creations from our visit to the opening night of the “Alight at Night” display at Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario (November 27th, 2010)

The winning entry roamed away from the more traditional gingerbread house theme and created a Santa’s toolbox that looked like real varnished wood until you got up really close to it. Excellent use of icing colours and 3D texturing made the final product look very convincing and certainly impressed the judges as well as the public.

2010 Gingerbread Competition – Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario

2010 Gingerbread Competition – Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario

In addition to the fantastic light display outside, there was also a great display of entries to the 2nd annual Gingerbread competition inside of the Crysler Hall. The competition rules were fairly simple – maximum size of base was 2 ft by 2ft, commercial kits couldn’t be used, food ingredients only (i.e. no styrofoam, wood , plastic or metal supports or framing), and gingerbread being the primary building ingredient.

Christmas Lights 2010 – Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario

My wife and I traveled down to Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, Ontario for the opening night (November 27th) of the Alight At Night Festival at Upper Canada Village. (LOCATION) No snow on the ground yet but I am sure that that will arrive any day now.  Temperature was about -3C and only a light breeze was blowing, so wandering around the well illuminated streets made for a pleasant evening.

2009 Ottawa Flickr Group outing to Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario

2009 Ottawa Flickr Group outing to Upper Canada Village, Morrisburg, Ontario

Although there was a bit of a line-up at the admission wicket when we arrived, a member of our group had arrived earlier and purchased a batch of tickets for the group so only a small number of the group needed to stay in the line to get tickets. The temperature was not all that cold during the day but as the sun set, the cold air off of the expanse of the St. Lawrence River certainly made for some cold fingers pretty quickly especially when gloves had to be taken off to manipulate the tripod or the camera controls.
