Carp Farmer’s Market 2012

Carp Farmer’s Market 2012

We took a quick trip out to the Carp Farmer’s Market to take a look at what was for offer this year. My wife purchased a bit of farm produce and I chatted with a few photographers and snapped the shutter a few times.

The 149th Annual Carp Fair opens Sept 21st-23rd this year.  For more information about that country fair, visit their website at: Carp Fair 2012

A few more fire hydrants for my collection of fire hydrant images, this time they come from the fair grounds at Carp, Ontario.

A short walk in Ottawa’s Greenbelt

A short walk in Ottawa’s Greenbelt

My purpose for being out the trail today was to try out Graeme’s Nikon D70s which he had internally modified a few years ago to use as a dedicated IR camera. I was also carrying along my normal D300 equipped with my much older 55mm Macro lens. This post just includes some of the images that I took with the regular camera. For a look at the IR images from the modified D90, see here: IR Photography.

IR Photography

IR Photography

A few years ago, Graeme converted his Nikon D70S to an dedicated IR camera and has produced some interesting results using the camera. Today, I decided to take the camera out for a short walk through some nearby fields and trails. Rather interesting how the shots turn out so differently in IR compared to full spectrum.

The Flowers of Carleton University Greenhouses

The Flowers of Carleton University Greenhouses

I was at Carleton University to pick up a copy of the poster for the upcoming Carleton University 13th Annual Butterfly Exhibit so had a bit of time to take a look into the greenhouse.  The butterflies won’t be arriving for a few weeks yet but that didn’t stop me from clicking the shutter a few times.

Fort Ontario, Oswego, NY

Fort Ontario, Oswego, NY

I had spent the night in my tent at Selkirk Shores State Park which is located about 20 miles to the east of Oswego, NY. While checking out in the morning, park staff had told me that there was a fort in Oswego that was operated by the New York State Parks and Historic Preservation organization. With only that information, and no specific directions, off I headed for Oswego, NY stopping along the way to photograph a fire hydrant or two :-).

New York State Fair 2012, Syracuse, NY

New York State Fair 2012, Syracuse, NY

After taking a look at Fort Ontario and the Marine Museum in Oswego, NY, I headed into Syracuse to meet up with my son at the New York State Fair. I had not been to a large fair in quite a number of years and was surprised to find that not a lot had changed.  Food stands were plentiful and there were plentiful games to play if you wanted or hoped for another stuffed animal or cartoon character. The following images might bring back a few memories for those who, like me, have been deprived of an annual dose of fairdom.

In order to survive at a large fair, you must be happy maneuvering through large crowds and trying to keep your appetite under control is always a challenge.

Before considering which of the many fattening treats we might sink our teeth into, we stopped with many others to smile and laugh as entertainer, Michael Hilby , worked his magic atop a unicycle.

Then, of course, we had to stop and check out a car or two that caught our eye. Any car with “Daytona 500” decals is bound to get a bit more attention than any of the other vehicles.

We eventually made our decision.  Pizza won the vote. I didn’t need the calories but pizza was likely the least fattening of all of the foods that were on offer.

Cotton candy and candied apples would have been a nice substitute for dessert but, again, I was able to show restraint but just barely! A bit of applause please :-).

Once we had succumbed to the food demons, we headed out into the rest of the Fairgrounds where we found an interesting assortment of rides and a fantastic selection of games of chance, skill, and humiliation.  Over the years, I have learned that no matter how hard I try I won’t be able to knock over the requisite number of little milk bottles nor find a way to break a balloon with a dart, so I am satisfied to just walk around clicking the shutter.

I was rather surprised to find that some of the games and exhibits were the same as they had been twenty or more years before, but I guess if something is successful, there is no real urgency to change the game plan.

Last chance! Everyone is a potential winner!

I was eventually coerced into trying my hand at one of the games.  I knew that it was a foregone conclusion that I would not likely be successful with the bowling ball but I tried anyway. NO success! It was starting to get dark and I didn’t have my tripod with me so  soon my shutter clicking potential would diminish and it would be time to head home.

T-shirts anyone?

One last flash shot for the night – a fire hydrant on the way back to the car.

H. Lee White Marine Museum, Oswego, NY

H. Lee White Marine Museum, Oswego, NY

This morning, when I packed my tent and left the campground at Selkirk Shores State Park and headed to Oswego, it was my intent to look at a fort. Turns out that the Fort Ontario that I was looking for was on the East side of the Oswego River and I was now on the west side of the river. That’s when I found the footsteps, the decorated fence and the numerous signs directing me to the H. Lee White Marine Museum. They didn’t know my interest in photographing different colors and styles of fire hydrants either but they even had one of those by the gate to try and lure me in.  All these things worked!

Selkirk Shores State Park

Selkirk Shores State Park

It was a bit late at night when I arrived at Selkirk Shores State Park so, when I awoke in the morning, I got up onto the picnic table to take a few shots of the area and of my camping spot in particular. Definitely not what I would call a remote site but adequate for the purpose! Despite the density, noise levels were quite reasonable and not a problem. No blaring radios!

3rd Quarter 2012- MegapixelTravel’s most popular blogs

3rd Quarter 2012 – MegapixelTravel’s most popular blogs

Top Ranking – For the second quarter in a row the top ranking goes to blogs about the Kingdom of Osgoode. Although the Kingdom of Osgoode blog for 2012 still garnered quite a bit of attention, it was the 2011 live Hand-fasting wedding blog and video combined with the video of knights battling that kept the Kingdom on top.

Near the top (educational)Poison Ivy once again with mermaids a close second along with my review of the North Face Mountain 25 tent.

Near the top (athletics) – We didn’t photograph the 2012 event this year but quite a few people visited our site to view past cycling posts especially the 2011 RLCT post. In the heat of the summer quite a few people must have been thinking Polar Bear Swim as blogs relating to the activity of donning a bathing suit and jumping into ice cold water were very popular during the quarter.

Near the top (International travel) – Graeme traveled to Denmark and Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium and the blog entries related to those countries were viewed regularly but, as mentioned above, the Mermaids of Copenhagen  got the most notice. When the link to “El Otro Varadero” made it onto the TripAdvisor website, that specific blog, as well as our other Cuba entries, found their spot in the sunshine.

Near the top (North American travel) – Good hiking weather meant lots of people were interested in the Bruce Trail – Lions Head photos as well as the entries for similar hikes around the countryside.

Near the top (Historical) – With the addition to the annual re-enactment of the French and Indian War at Ogdensburg, the Civil War reenactment at Massena and a visit to the 19th century lifestyle of Upper Canada Village, a lot of history was covered but we didn’t attend any of the reenactments specific to the War of 1812 but do have a couple in mind for later in the War.

Back  to the 2nd quarter highlights.

Upcoming event of particular interest to us is the Annual Live Butterfly Show at Carleton University.
