Fort Ontario, Oswego, NY

Above ground, the buildings were used for a variety of purposes and restoration continues one room at at time. Some rooms are furnished to depict how they would have been used back in the 1860’s while other rooms are used to show uniforms, handguns and swords that  would have used in various periods of the history of the fort.

The fort and its buildings and contents were interesting to see and visit. Definitely not as well developed as the 1850’s vintage Upper Canada Village, which I had visited a short time earlier, but interesting to get one more perspective on the battles over the Great Lakes waterways and trade.

The Friends of Fort Ontario stage various reenactments at the fort. For more information about the fort and current activities sponsored by the Friends of Fort Ontario, visit their website: Friends of Fort Ontario or, visit the website of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

As I left the fort and headed out to see more of the Oswego area, it was nice to see that the lone fire hydrant was still guarding the front gate.
