New England Trip 2012 – Day 3 – Schuylerville NY

New England Trip 2012 – Day 3 – Schuylerville NY

Days one and two of our trip had featured clear blue skies and lots of sunshine.  As this shot from a corner in Schuylerville NY clearly shows, the weather definitely changed for Day Three of our trip. The village of Schuylerville (population about 2,000) is located on the west side of the Hudson River and was an important location during the Revolutionary Wars and the Battles of Saratoga of the 1770’s.  We had spent the night in Glens Falls and were now on our way to visit the nearby Saratoga National Historic Site when, despite the weather conditions, I saw the unique and colorful bicycle racks at the side of the road and just had to stop to photograph them! New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – Lake George

New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – Lake George

By the time that we got to Lake George, we were tried and a bit hungry.  We really hadn’t traveled very far but we had stopped at plenty of locations to look around and take photos. Continue reading

New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – Long Lake NY

New England Trip 2012 – Day  2 – Long Lake NY

If I stopped for every spot that we came to on this day on the road, we would never get to our destination before dark so after stopping to take a few shots around Long Lake, NY, I put the camera away and drove on. Continue reading

New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – Tupper Lake, NY

New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – Tupper Lake, NY

After photographing the flock of Wild Turkeys at Higley Flow State Park, we headed further south to Tupper Lake where we stopped at a couple of locations including a parking lot by the ball diamond where I noticed this sign that seems to imply that the ball park is only open during the hours when children and adults alike are unlikely to be around to use it. I’m certain that that isn’t the intended meaning but it did make me smile a bit to try and figure it out.

New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – Colton, NY

New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – Colton, NY

As we headed south after a short tour of SUNY Canton, we made a short stop in the town of Colton, NY to photograph some of the interesting buildings that were there.

The Hepburn Library was one of seven public libraries funded in the area by A. Barton Hepburn. It would be hard to miss this beautiful stone building so prominently located on a Main Street corner just a short distance from the building housing the Colton Museum.

New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – SUNY Canton

New England Trip 2012 – Day 2 – SUNY Canton

Our first day on the road was a short one and we stayed the night at the Stonefence Resort outside of Ogdensburg.  At this time of the year, finding a place to stay is pretty easy since families with school-aged children aren’t normally vacationing.   In fact, at this time of the year, our car usually finds it pretty lonely in the parking lot and we generally have the restaurant all to our selves or need to share with only a limited number of other guests.  Certainly no line-ups! 🙂

New England trip 2012 – Day 1 – Ogdensburg, NY

New England trip 2012 – Day 1 – Ogdensburg, NY

Our original plan for this period of time was to fly to Vancouver and then borrow my brother’s car for a trip along the west coast down to the Los Angeles area. We changed or minds when we looked at the long range forecast for our intended route. It looked like we might encounter three or four days of nasty weather along the west coast, so we decided instead to visit the New England states and enjoy the many colours of the Fall foliage.

We planned on leaving early in the morning and traveling straight south but, one thing led to another and we ended up leaving rather late in the day so our first day of travel was a rather short one and we arrived in Ogdensburg, NY  just in time to enjoy the evening light along the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

Carleton University Butterfly Exhibit 2012 – Final Day – October 8, 2012

Carleton University Butterfly Exhibit 2012 – Final Day – October 8, 2012

As is normal for the butterfly show at Carleton University, the number of people who want to get into the Greenhouses to see the butterflies tends to exceed the available time and at some point THE SIGN had to come out! Continue reading

Carleton University – Ottawa, Ontario – a few random images

Carleton University – Ottawa, Ontario
After dropping my brother off at the Airport for a long flight back to Vancouver, I stopped at Carleton University so that I could lend a hand, if needed, at the end of the Butterfly Exhibit. I knew that there would be a long line-up at the end of this, the final day of the butterfly exhibition, as is the norm after each year’s ten-day show.

Once I had determined that I wouldn’t be needed for a while I decided to take a short walk around that area of the campus to see what I might be able to find to photograph. Continue reading
