Ecological Tour of Cayo Coco

Outside of the cave if you weren’t scared by the bats (that occasionally flew through our group) you may be grossed out by this. Our guide put his hand in a termites nest, and then ate one! Yummy?

Well after a short bug hunt we were all told that it was time for sand dunes and virgin beaches, so off we went on our train to a tropical paradise. But not before our guide played with a cuban dog that was attracted by the noise of our group.

Okay to the Sand Dunes! Quite a view and very powdery white sand. It was a bit breezy, but it was a nice ocean air (how could it not be ocean air?)

And back to the Train for a quick ride over to the beach!

The beach was very shallow quite a ways out, and our guide went out too look for starfish, and everyone else went to look for shells and such. We were told to keep our shoes on as this beach has little crabs that are burrowed in the sand and would attack anything that stepped on it, not an issue for sandals or shoes, but barefoot it was a no-no.

After a while our guide came back with some starfish, some others in our troop had also found a few and it made for quite a collection when all is said and done.

Its important to note that you should not leave them out of the water for more than 15 minutes at any one time.

So who is the sucker now?

After everyone getting their fair share of pictures and sticky starfish experiences in it was time to take them back into the ocean, and for us to leave the beach on our way back to the resort.

On the way back to the resort we stopped off by a little cabana where one could check out a much rockier coast line or purchase a lobster lunch. I did manage to take a few pictures worth noting of some of the local animal population (Iguana, Vulture, Pelican).
