Once at the summit, there is nothing to impede panoramic view of the Lake Placid valley, the High Peaks region including Mt. Marcy and the Algonquin Mountain areas.
Here’s proof that I wasn’t the youngest on the mountaintop that day LOL I thought the kids behaved beautifully. I wonder how their parents felt as the energy level was back to 100% for the two boys after sitting for only a short rest at the top LOL.
The well-used trail takes the hiker up 2.2 miles (4.6 km) and almost 2,000 vertical feet (600 vertical m) to the mountain’s bare-rock summit, which resembles the alpine summits found on many higher peaks, but is instead the result of a 1903 fire.
Compared to the near zero visibility that we had the day before when we traveled the Veteran’s Highway to the peak of Whiteface Mountain, we had near perfect weather for our hike to the summit of Cascade Mountain.
We ate our bit of lunch at the summit and then headed back down.
A short distance back down the trail there is a junction where hikers can branch off and go to the top of Porter Mountain, another of the 46 High Peaks. Today, I took this Porter Mountain side trip while my wife continued down to the parking lot.
