Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, Ontario

Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, Ontario (Location)

We had some visitors from the U.S earlier this week so spent some time visiting the Upper Canada Village located between Cornwall, Ontario and Morrisburg, Ontario. I have been there a few times in recent years photographing the seasonal lights but this was the first time in quite a while that I had visited the village in daylight hours without snow on the ground. (Previous Upper Canada Village posts)

In the past year, the new entrance has been completed and provides access to the Village properties as well as to a new museum-style group of displays. This year, the displays focus heavily on the events of the war of 1812-14 which impacted this area directly when the Americans crossed the St. Lawrence River and battled with the locals, the natives and the British at Crysler Farm. The village itself reflects a period of time closer to the mid 1800’s but with this being the bicentennial of the War of 1812-14  Canada and with the Fall of 1813 marking the bicentennial of the actual battles at Crysler Farm, there is more than a normal emphasis on the events of the 1812-14 period. Upper Canada Village – The Asseltine Woollen Mill

Upper Canada Village – The Asseltine Woollen Mill

The Asseltine Woollen Mill was one of the buildings that I visited and photographed extensively during a recent visit to the Upper Canada Village located west of Cornwall, Ontario. The Woollen Mill is one of many 1860’s vintage buildings on this historic site. To see the other buildings and activities visit our website entry: Upper Canada Village.

The Asseltine Woollen Mill was moved to the Upper Canada Village location in 1957.  Prior to that, it had operated from 1828 until the 1930’s on the banks of Mill Creek in Ernesttown Township near Kingston,Ontario. At the Village, it now continues as a functional water-powered woollen mill providing a look at mill activities as they might have appeared in the 1860’s.

As visitors enter the mill on the main floor, they are greeted with the smells of the raw wool process and can examine both the bins of uncleaned wool as well as the washing vats where the wool would have been cleaned before being set out to dry.

As I wander around places like this, I am always intrigued by the signs and the rules that were in place in that time and place. Continue reading

Some Kanata, Ontario fire hydrants

Some Kanata, Ontario fire hydrants

I needed to walk off a bit of birthday cake so, with camera in hand, started walking home after having joined my father at the August Forest Hill birthday party. I could find some interesting things to photograph along the way but instead decided, once again, to photograph some of the different varieties of fire hydrants that I met along the way. August Birthday Party – Forest Hill, Kanata

August Birthday Party – Forest Hill, Kanata

My father turned 94 y.o. this month and we had a family birthday party for him on the patio of Forest Hill Long Term Care Facility. My father enjoyed large piece of ice cream cake!

Then an hour later, he and I went inside off of the patio and he joined with the other residents in celebrating with others who had had birthdays in the month of August. My father enjoyed another piece of cake! Continue reading

Visiting Belgium 2012

Visiting Belgium 2012

Belgium would be our fourth and last country to visit on this trip. We had begun the trip in Copenhagen, Denmark, taken a one-day side-trip across the bridge into Sweden, then traveled to the Netherlands where we visited Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Now after a short train trip from Rotterdam we were staying for a few days in Brugge, Belgium before visiting Ghent and flying home from Bruxelles. Continue reading

An Evening of Live Theatre at Perth, Ontario

An Evening of Live Theatre at Perth , Ontario (Location)

Perth is an active community in Lanark County and a place that I visit from time to time to photograph snakes and other wildlife at the Perth Wildlife Preserve. In fact, one of our most active blogs is the blog showing the Northern Water Snakes and Garter Snakes at the Perth Wildlife Centre early in the Spring when they are sunning themselves on the banks of the Tay River after coming out of hibernation. Each Spring, Perth, Ontario is also an important water station and staging point in the annual Rideau Lakes Cycling Tour (OBC RLCT 2009 blog entry and OBC RLCT 2011 blog entry).

One of the monuments on the banks of the Tay River celebrates the important role of the Dairy farmers and cheese makers in the area, specifically the making, in 1892, of the world’s largest cheese weighing 22,000 lbs.

Visiting the Netherlands 2012

Visiting the Netherlands 2012

Although we had a few moments of concern when we learned that Copenhagen’s Metro ticket vending machines only took coins and not plastic, our flight from Copenhagen to Amsterdam was uneventful. Danish and Swedish portion of our vacation travels can be viewed at our Copenhagen, Denmark entry. Continue reading
