Ottawa, Ontario to Las Vegas, Nevada

April 5th, 2013

As noted in an earlier post, Graeme and I were heading for Las Vegas with our trip coinciding with the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) conference. For both of us, the decision on which airline to choose was a combination of cost and convenience and finding a flight schedule that would leave later in the day and arrive in Las Vegas as early as possible. On my previous flight to Las Vegas, I had chosen WestJet so that I could meet up with a travel partner living in Toronto.  On this current occasion, our choice came down to a few flight options where we would be changing planes in either Washington, Toronto, Calgary or Detroit.  Continue reading

Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society Annual GIANT AUCTION – March 24th, 2013

This year, the Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society (OVAS) combined their annual auction held on the Sunday with a Saturday slate of guest speakers and  a room full of vendors to produce a fun-filled weekend dubbed AQUAMANIA.

Today’s entry will focus on the events of the GIANT AUCTION on Sunday March 24th, 2013. To see images and information relating to the Friday and Saturday activity see our previous two blog entries.

Friday night preparations
Saturday speakers and vendors

As has become the tradition in the past few years, Peter was hard at work late into the evening and again early in the morning dealing with the registration of a varied collection of items from gravel to driftwood to full sized aquariums and fish with unpronounceable Latin names. Other members and volunteers had already done all of the hard work of setting up the tables and chairs before I arrived – I was certainly happy to see that :-). Continue reading

Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society (OVAS) – Aquamania weekend – October 23 – 24, 2013

The weather promises to cooperate this year as the executive and volunteers of the Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society continue to work to put the final touches on this weekend’s AQUAMANIA – a two day event culminating in Sunday’s GIANT AUCTION.  (LOCATION: Best Western Hotel and Conference Centre, 1876 Robertson Road, Bells Corners, Ottawa, Ontario)

There will definitely still be snow on the ground but the forecast is for sunny, blue skies and temperatures in the +2C – +6 C range, a definite change from the past couple of years. Continue reading

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic – February 2013

Graeme and I holidayed in Punta Cana in December 2009 (2009 Dominican Republic blog entries)

This time around, it was my wife and I who were hoping to enjoy a bit of warmth and sunshine away from Ottawa’s snow-covered landscape. To travel south from Ottawa, we need to find a tour departing directly from Ottawa or else, as an alternative we drive to Montreal or Toronto to get alight from either of those two travel hubs. On this occasion, we found a Sunwing tour departing from Montreal that fit our schedule. Our flight was scheduled to leave from P. E. Trudeau airport at 9AM so, once we factored in the required three hours for check-in and the 2.5hr drive from home to airport, we decided to drive down to Montreal the day before our flight departure date and stayed at the Holiday Inn Express where for a relatively small extra fee we could park our car until our return from Punta Cana.

The drive from Ottawa to Montreal would normally be uneventful. Not this time, though. High winds and falling/drifting snow reduced visibility in some places to close to zero and added a bit of extra excitement of our trip.

Ottawa weather – February 11, 2013

Ottawa weather – February 11, 2013

_RON7983-Feb-11-Ottawa-weat

It’s been an all too familiar scene recently.  Snow is falling once again this morning and the temperature is expected to rise to about +1C by the end of day. Of course, when snow is falling in the morning and the temperatures is rising a few degrees during the day, the outcome is often a slippery, messy one and it looks like today will be such a day.  It is 9AM and a freezing rain warning is in effect!

I know that it wasn’t a good thing for me to comment yesterday on how nicely I had shoveled the last vestiges of the last snowfall off of my driveway and onto the piles growing beside the driveway (one now exceeds six feet near the roadway!).

Tomorrow is forecast to be a bit warmer, still.  Certainly hope that it is warm enough to melt whatever falls today.  I am beginning to tire of the act of shoveling snow, regardless of how much exercise it might provide!

Ottawa Winterlude 2013 – Ice Sculptures

Ottawa Winterlude 2013 – Ice Sculptures

_RON7962-WinterludeA retroactive post – We started off our downtown visit with a stop at the Rideau Center and then we were off to the NAC to purchase tickets for an upcoming performance and then it was off to Confederation Park to take a look at how the ice sculptures were progressing. Weather couldn’t have been much better for the sculptors and their blocks of ice. Unlike some previous years, there was no severe cold weather in the forecast and above-zero temperatures weren’t forecast either, so with a bit of luck the work of this year’s sculptors will hang around for a few extra days.

As I switched on the computer this evening, I was a bit surprised that our Megapixel Travel blog views counter was registering 100,001. Thought that this event might not happen until Christmas Eve.

Many thanks to everyone who has come for a visit in the past and contributed to that total. Hopefully over the upcoming months we’ll be able to add many more stories and images to provide you with even more photographic and travel entertainment.

Seasons Greetings to one and all.

Ron and Graeme.
