The Sunset – Can I improve on it?

Once you begin to play around with cropping of any image, the process opens up all sorts of possibilities.  For instance, cropping multiple thin slices from the same image can yield multiple headers, footers or side bar images each of which can have its own interesting characteristics.

For many people, the joy of photography now comes not just from the act of composing the picture and pressing the shutter but from the many post-processing possibilities that can be achieved with the mere click of a mouse or key stroke.

Just like adding a streak of purple to the hair, the modern day photographer can just as easily coordinate the image to a greater or lesser extent with a given month’s favorite hair colour.

Or if that isn’t interesting enough, perhaps a bit of selective removal of some of the red/green or blue spectrum or for a bit of excitement, how about solarization of the entire image.

Finally, for those who are tired of all these colour choices, how about back to the basic Black and White image that would have been dodged or burned in the dark room to accomplish effects similar to what HDR does in colour today.

I personally like my friend’s picture the way it is, but that doesn’t mean that everyone has to be in agreement. After all, that is one of the beauties of photography. Everyone can have their own opinion :-).

    Ron,

Thanks again for the very informative article! As you mentioned I will definitely be trying HDR. Will be interesting to see what I can do with either multiple shots or even single shots in RAW and some post processing. The only thing I did to the pic was darken it down slightly to match what I seen.

I was in a boat so it was impossible to use a tripod also 🙁 but maybe next time I can shoot it better. I also found http://qtpfsgui.sourceforge.net/ something I can try HDR for free.

    Thanks again!
    Bruce
