There was a bit of an altercation developing in front of the Royal Palace so I decided that it would be best to move along quickly before I became part of the activity. I definitely didn’t have time to argue with anyone during this visit and didn’t want to end up in some dungeon in chains so headed over to the nearby Piazza Trieste e Trento which is effectively like a large traffic circle around a central fountain called the Fontanade Carciofo. There, I had a talk with the pigeons before heading along the street to the Galleria Umberto 1.
Like the Galleria in Milan, the Galleria Umberto 1 in Naples is a large cross-shaped mall with intricate glass domes keeping out the elements. Designed to have merchants on the main levels and apartments on the upper levels, the Galleria Umberto 1, with its mosaic designs underfoot, is an interesting architectural highlight worth the visit especially if you want to spend some money in any of the interesting shops that line its walkways.
It is amazing how intricate some of the ceiling patterns are even under some of the archways along some of these busy Naples streets.
