Beaver Lake Nature Center (near to Syracuse, NY)

The trails at the Beaver Lake Nature Center are well marked with large signs marking the entrance to each trail and then smaller signs on posts at intervals along the trails.

As its name implies, the Three Meadows trail was a bit more open in character than the Hemlock Trail or the Deep Woods Trail.

It was while walking through one of the open areas on the Three Meadows Trail that I encountered a half dozen White-Tailed Deer lying down in a thicket near to the trail. Although they got up as I approached, and made sure that there was plenty of distance between us, it was clear by their upraised tails that they were definitely in high alert status waiting to flee into the denser woods at the slightest sign of suspect movement on my part.
