For the re-enactment, boats come in a number of different designs and configurations. A bit of swarthiness in appearance helps with the believability of the event as does the sound and smoke from the firing of the armaments.

Great shots! I found your flickr stream while showing a friend what happened last year (my cell phone took a swim, so I got none of my own). I didn’t realize I had appeared in quite so many good shots of the battle. (I’m the guy with the green bandanna & blunderbuss on board the Merganser.)
Will you be back again next weekend for this year’s Founder’s Day?
Yes we will be covering the event again this year, and this time officially on the official photographer’s list for the event.
That’s awesome! Come on down and introduce yourself. I’m hoping this year the wind will behave and we’ll be able to unfurl the sails. the Merganser is much more photogenic with the sails up. (…and I don’t have to row as much…)
