Notre Dame de Paris, Paris France
Generally referred to simply as “Notre Dame” in English, this Roman Catholic cathedral is still in use. This famous cathedral is located on ÃŽle de la Cité in the middle of the Seine River. Considered to be a fine example of French Gothic architecture, the actual building represents the ideas and designs of a number of architects who designed various parts over a period of almost 200 years of construction not to mention the interpretive reconstructions carried out in later years to try to undo damage done during the French Revolution. Sometimes it is nice to have a tour guide along to point out all the little intricacies and this was one such time. This photo is taken looking East. Victor Hugo’s “Hunchback of Notre Dame” relates to this cathedral and its heritage. Flying buttresses were an add-on feature to support the outer walls of this gothic style cathedral. Notre Dame is one of the earliest examples of this type of flying buttress architecture.
Just had to take one of those “I was there” photos. This point is known as “point zero” or “Kilometre zero” and marks the traditional centre of Paris and the starting point for measuring distances from the centre of Paris. It is located directly in front of the “Notre Dame de Paris” Cathedral.
The Louvre, Paris, France
Photos taken from the Dorsey Museum and from the ground.
The Louvre is one huge complex with paintings and statues in every corner and on every wall. In most areas of the complex photography was prohibited or severely restricted although this didn’t seem to hinder the camera phone folks all that much.
