St. Lawrence Seaway – Eisenhower Lock – Massena, NY (Location)

The Eisenhower Lock near Massena NY (Location) is one of two American-operated locks on the St. Lawrence River. Five other locks are operated along this route on the Canadian side of the St. Lawrence River and are, collectively, an integral part of the St. Lawrence Seaway System. The St. Lawrence Seaway locks provide a method for ocean vessels to travel from Montreal, Quebec to Lake Ontario and then back again without the need for intermediary-sized vessels. A further collection of locks between the Great Lakes opens the route all of the way to Thunderbay, Ontario and Duluth, Minnesota on the western end of Lake Superior, a total distance of about 3700 km or 2300 miles. Robert Moses State Park, Massena, NY.

Robert Moses State Park, Massena, NY.

Robert Moses State Park is located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River near to Massena, NY. (Location). I was traveling to this state park in order to enjoy and photograph the activities of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association Civil War Weekend. I was detained in Ottawa on family-related business so did not arrive at the park until dusk and the park office closed just before I arrived. I had brought my tent expecting that I would not have too much trouble finding an available spot to pitch the small tent. Continue reading

Civil War reenactment encampment – Massena, NY (2012)

Civil War reenactment encampment – Massena, NY (2012)

Today, I crossed the 45th parallel in Robert Moses State Park and was transported to another time and place in American history. In a blink of an eye, I found myself transported about 150 years back in time south to a point around Fredricksburg, Virginia and smack in the middle of the encampments of the two opposing forces, the Confederates and the Union Army. The American Civil War (1861 – 1865) had been underway for a year but now in 1862 Fredricksburg was the focus of the Union troops. Continue reading

In addition to the military encampment hosted by the 2nd Michigan, Co E Reenactment Unit and the battle reenactment itself, both of which will be covered in separate blog entries, the Civil War Weekend presented by the St. Lawrence County Historical Association of Massena, NY (SLCHA) also included vendors (sutlers) of period clothing and miscellaneous items Civil War reenactor interest, hands-on displays of period armaments, chair re-caning demonstrations, a fashion show titled “The Many Layers of a 19th Century Woman”, and many other ‘educational’ components. Hopefully, the following images will provide a bit of the flavour (Canadian spelling :-)) of the day. Continue reading

The Cloyne Pioneer Museum and Archives, Cloyne, Ontario

The Cloyne Pioneer Museum and Archives, Cloyne, Ontario (Location)

The events surrounding the 200th anniversary of the start of the War of 1812 have begun in earnest in Canada and the USA but although I have been able to get to reenactments of the French and Indian War of the 1760’s and have a Civil War reenactment on my agenda, I didn’t expect to find anything relating to any of these wars in the Cloyne Pioneer Museum. Rather surprised, therefore to find this cannonball.

Bon Echo Provincial Park – 3AM!

Bon Echo Provincial Park – 3AM!

3AM – Outside of the tent, it is pouring rain. Raccoons are making the rounds. Everything inside the tent is dry and I have been awakened by the rain and raccoons fighting over an unopened sachet of hot chocolate powder inadvertently left out on the picnic table. Adell, with a flashlight out the door, is providing me with a blow by blow of the masked bandit activities outside the door of her side of the tent and shouting “Scat, Scat” at the raccoons who have now scurried up a tree. Not a peep out of the dogs in the neighboring campsites even though the raccoons must be only a few feet from where those dogs are sleeping.

It seems a bit strange to be tapping away at an iPad – in a tent at 3AM! Time to stop this silliness and get back to sleep. Hope those raccoons enjoy chocolate milk powder :-).

The woods have been bone dry for weeks but, after tonight’s all-night rain, I expect that the ban on fires will be lifted.

Bon Echo Provincial Park – pictographs

Bon Echo Provincial Park – pictographs

When we arrived at Bon Echo Provincial Park (location) this time around, the first bit of news that greeted us was the news that a “Boil water” advisory was in effect. It was  a precautionary warning since they had done some pump repairs and, under such circumstances, post the warning until water testing results come back. Continue reading

The North Face Talus 33 – a pictorial review

The North Face Talus 33 – a pictorial review

The Talus 33 is one of three “North Face” tents that I own.  It is advertised as a 3 person, 3 season tent but I have never tried to get three persons into the tent.  As a two person tent, it works really well. Continue reading
