Butterflies – Red Cracker – Hamadryas amphinome

Butterflies – Red Cracker – Hamadryas amphinome
Starry Night Cracker - Butterfly Conservatory, Niagara Falls, Ontario

Photographed at the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls, Ontario in 2009.

The Crackers includes 20 member of the species Hamadryas.  They all share a calico pattern of their upperwing.   The pattern enables them to be well camouflaged when resting on tree trunks in the neotropical rainforest world that they inhabit. They are called Crackers because the males of the species can make a crackling sound described in some sources as the sound of crackling bacon.

Butterflies – Doris Longwing – Heliconius doris

Butterflies – Doris Longwing – Heliconius doris

DSC_8938-Butterfly

Photographed at the Carleton University “Live” Butterfly exhibit in the Fall of 2010. (Location)

The Doris Longwing is found in Central America south into the Amazon watershed of South America.  The basic identification markings of this longwing are the two white markings on the fore wing. The Doris has different color variations (subspecies) depending on its habitat and where it is located.  According to various sources, the color variations can include the blue/black combination of the hind wing as seen in the above photo or can be a combination of  red/black or green/black. There are numerous other Longwings of the Heliconiidae family of butterflies and telling them apart is something that I am no expert on so ….

Butterflies – Common Buckeye – Junonia coenia

Butterflies – Common Buckeye – Junonia coenia

_EMG2909-blog

Photographed on Merritt Island in Florida while on a cycling tour in 2011.

A member of the brush-footed family of butterflies (Nymphalidae), the medium-sized Buckeye is very wide spread in North America and frequently encountered in all parts of the USA and in most years migrates northward into the southern portions of Ontario and Quebec with the occasional sighting in other provinces. Its range extends south into the norther sections of Columbia and includes Mexico and Central America.  The Buckeye is a butterfly of the open meadows rather than the forests.  It is a multi-generational butterfly in the south and if its migration reaches Canada in early June and conditions are favorable it is possible that more than one generation will take flight during the summer months with the last of the broods likely migrating southward as the weather cools.  Buckeyes do not overwinter in Canada.

Butterflies – Blue Morpho – Morpho peleides

Butterflies – Blue Morpho – Morpho peleides

The above Blue Morpho butterfly was photographed at the Carleton University Exhibit in 2011.

The Blue Morpho is a large butterfly (12 cm or more) which is commonly on exhibit at live butterfly displays. It is definitely a favourite when it flutters around a conservatory flashing the bright, shimmering blue of its upper wing surfaces. The blue Morpho has multiple eye spots on its underwing while the other large butterfly in many exhibitions, the Owl butterfly, has only one eyespot when its wings are closed.

The fluorescent blue coloration displayed by the Blue Morph is a result of reflected light rather than a dye and therefore is most brilliant when seen in a brightly lit conservatory. In diminished light, the wing changes color from blue to a brown. The adult feeds on the juices of rotting fruits and is therefore often feeding next to the Owl butterfly which also favours tropical fruit juices. In its natural surroundings, the Blue Morpho can be found in the rain forests of South America and in Central America and  Mexico as well as some of the Caribbean islands. Because of the high demand from ‘live’ butterfly exhibitions, this is one species of butterfly that is raised in commercial butterfly farms.

The above open-wing shot showing the blue upper surface was taken at Butterfly World in Fort Lauderdale.
