Provincetown Pilgrim Monument, Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA

After photographing cigar butts and other interesting things between Chatham and Provincetown, we arrived at Provincetown and, after looking at the plaques at the base of the hill, I climbed to the town’s best viewpoint, the top of the Pilgrim Monument .

New England Trip 2012 – Day 9 – Chatham to Provincetown, Cape Cod

Chatham Lighthouse Cape Cod

Our plan for the day was to drive to Provincetown at the end of Cape Cod and then return to Chatham again in the evening. We had never been to Provincetown, so weren’t sure what we might find when we got there, or what we might see along the way. Our first side trip was to see the Chatham lighthouse and to look at a bit of the local shoreline. (above – click on thumbnail for larger version of information plaque) Continue reading

“Pumpkin People in the Park” – Kate Gould Park, Chatham, Cape Cod

We were not in Chatham for their Octoberfest Festival but many of the pumpkin people displays were still in pretty good shape so I decided to photograph most of them for this blog.  Lots of good ideas to consider for some other time. Continue reading

New England Trip 2012 – Day 8 – Chatham, Cape Cod MA

New England Trip 2012 – Chatham, Cape Cod MA

After visiting Newport RI the day before, we had driven into Hyannis, Cape Cod MA in the dark. Nothing more exciting that driving around a place like Hyannis when you have never been there before.  Lots of traffic on the streets and intersections all seemed to be at angles and roads all seemed to be curved :-). “Rough Point”, Newport, Rhode Island

“Rough Point”, Newport, Rhode Island

During our visit to Newport, Rhode Island, we decided to tour the former “summer home” of Doris Duke, daughter of James Buchanan Duke, a wealthy American electricity and tobacco industrialist.  The construction of the original “Rough Point” was completed in 1892 and served as a “summer home” for Frederick William Vanderbilt. Two wings were added by Mr. Duke after he purchased the home in 1922. His wife wanted more light and wanted more room for entertaining.

Doris Duke died in 1993 and the home is now owned and managed by the Newport Restoration Foundation which opened the home for public tours in 2000.

New England Trip 2012 – Day 7 – Newport, Rhode Island

New England Trip 2012 – Day 7 – Newport, Rhode Island

Last night we crossed from Connecticut into Rhode Island and toured along the beach area hoping that one of the beach resorts might still be open this late in the season. No luck! They were all closed for the season so we moved back inland a bit and found the Winnapaug Inn which stays open all year long. We had supper in their adjacent Venice Restaurant and then headed off to bed. It was pretty tough to see anything at night but,, in the morning when I walked out onto the room’s balcony, I found out that there was a golf course right next to us that provided me with a pretty nice view of the area.

Our destination for today was Newport, Rhode Island. Neither of us had been to Rhode Island before so were looking forward to the adventure of seeing some of Newport’s famous mansions and its seaport. We were traveling along the secondary roadways so getting to the western end of the Jamestown Bridge (Route 138) was our first challenge. The Jamestown Bridge is toll free and links the mainland to the island community of Jamestown and from there a toll bridge (the Newport Bridge) carries travelers to Newport, RI.

New England Trip 2012 – Day 6 – Mystic, Connecticut – Mystic Seaport and Maritime Village

It turns out that when we arrived at the Olde Mistic Village Shopping Mall, we initially thought that we were at the historic Mystic Seaport and Maritime Village. One is a shopping mall disguised as a village while the other is a multi-faceted maritime museum and historical site. Continue reading

New England Trip 2012 – Day 6 – New London, Connecticut

New England Trip 2012 – Day 6 – New London, Connecticut

We had started out the morning with a visit to Essex, CT, followed that with a quick visit back to Old Saybrook where we had stayed the night before and then we headed back out on the road again heading toward the Connecticut/Rhode Island border. Most the time when I am traveling, I try to stick to the less traveled country roads and avoid the interstates so that I can more easily pull off to the side of the road when I see something that I want to photograph. The only drawback to that approach is the lower speed limits and the potential of getting caught up in local traffic.
