Upper Canada Village near Morrisburg, Ontario

In the 1860’s, most farm families would have tried to be as self-sufficient as possible and would sell or barter or share their produce to fill in the spaces in their needs. On my grandfather’s farm in the Swan River area of Manitoba he had the grain for sale as well as a few pigs, cows and chickens and a large garden to supply the daily necessities of milk and eggs and meat and to produce enough potatoes, turnips and carrots to last through the winter in the root cellar. In many ways, the farm section of Upper Canada Village was a close fit with my memories of my grandfather’s farm including the equipment in the machine shed.

It was a bit hard to believe that summer was quickly coming to an end and before long we would be celebrating Thanksgiving but as I followed the farmer and his cow along the roadway of Upper Canada Village this summer afternoon, the signs were all around me that harvest time had arrived.

UPPER CANADA VILLAGE – An interesting place to take a step back in time! For more information about admission prices and their special events schedule, I would suggest a visit to their website: Upper Canada Village website
