Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site

Our tour guide, pictured here, all alone in this big second floor space, left us lots of time to explore on our own but was always nearby to answer any of the many questions that were raised by the members of the tour group. Her knowledge of mansion, her story-telling ability and overall good nature certainly added to the experience of our visit to this stately home.

The h0me contained the most modern plumbing of the day! It was also the first home in the neighborhood to have electricity!

 

Before long, it was time to head back down the staircase, touch the velvet bannister one last time, and descend further to the lower level to see where the meals would be prepared and to see where the staff would spend much of their time when not attending to the duties of the house.
