Breeding Bird Survey 2012 – The Shoals

Silvery Checkerspot (?) (Chlosyne nycteis)

Pearl Crescent (?) (Phycoides tharos)

A rather roughed up American Painted Lady (Vanessa virginiensis)

In addition to the butterflies, the heat of the day also aroused the dragonflies and damselflies and while I was trying to photograph the butterflies and dragonflies, I noticed a small movement out the corner of my eye and it was a small American Toad. Then almost at the same moment, a Garter Snake slithered across the roadway and quickly passed by only a few feet in front of me. I didn’t make the butterfly, to dragonfly, to toad, to snake transition quickly enough to photograph the snake!
