Breeding Bird Survey 2012 – Day 2 – Moving camp

Even though not part of our survey, we still keep our eyes open and the camera ready for birds, such as this Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus) that cross our path from time to time.  During the survey period earlier in the day, we had heard Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis) in the distance but no sightings.  We were, therefore, happy to see a Sandhill Crane on the opposite shore of a small lake (photo quality not optimal but good enough for recording what we saw). Always nice to get a sighting to confirm what you think that your ears have heard.

We didn’t think that we would have enough gas to get us through the next day’s survey route. We were, therefore, happy to find that the gas station in Chapleau was still open when we arrived. With that worry out of the way we enjoyed a nice oriental meal (no chopsticks though), stopped to take a few shots of some of the town’s interesting highlights and then got back to our tent before dark. 4AM would again arrive earlier that desired.

In 2005, Bell Canada used Chapleau as a test town for new forms of community Wi-Fi technology. From our experience, cell phone signals are fine near population centers but drops off quickly once those centers are out of sight.
