Fort Niagara, New York State

The location at the mouth of the Niagara River was occupied by the French from 1678  with various garrisons being stationned there from time to time. The more formal Fort Niagara with its commanding “Palace” was built by the French in 1726 and remained under French control from 1726 to 1759. During the French and Indian War, the British were able to put Fort Niagara under siege and capture the fort and occupy it from 1759 to 1796. The British again took control of Fort Niagara during the period of the War of 1812 and occupied it from 1813 to 1815 after which the fort was held and occupied by the Americans.

I don’t presently have any re-enactment photos reflecting the uniforms of the War of 1812 period but for those interested in the uniforms of the period of the French and Indian War, please see my Ogdensburg re-enactment series.

A number of individuals could be seen in period costume at various locations in the fort complex including a couple of individuals whom I spoke to in the Bakery.
