Fort Niagara, New York State

To support the ground level artillery, additional cannon fire from the North Redoubt would certainly make life approaching the ravelin rather risky to say the least.

The walls were thick and offered not only a place for gun placements but also provided re-enforced locations for storage of much needed gun powder and certain barreled refreshments. Cannon fire is noisy when out in the open, but I can only imagine that the sound in those enclosed area would have been entirely deafening during times of battle.
