Agriculture in the area, as well as tourism plays an important part in the continuing life of Merrickville. During summer months, the Merrickville locks continue to be an important stopping point on the Rideau Canal.
At this time of the year, the locks and its channel are dry, while not far away Spring melt-waters rush through existing river channels and past the site of the Merrickville Ruins.
