New Orleans, City Park, Botanical Gardens
The first weekend that I was in New Orleans (April 10-11, 2010), the botanical garden area of City Park was hosting the Annual Spring Garden show showcasing the various garden clubs and local vendors of all sorts of garden related plants and ornaments. I decided that April 11th, I would go to the show. An eclectic mix for certain.
Don Hostetler (Don Hosteler’s Birdworks) had a large number of hand made bird houses and bat houses available for sale at the New Orleans City Park Garden Sale event. I was impressed at his use of stainless steel ring nails and the added touch of copper surrounding the access hole to prevent damage by squirrels and other non-winged creatures.
In addition to the garden show, the basic botanical gardens were beginning to show the movement from Spring into Summer with water lilies beginning to flower and the rose beds beginning to show off their beautiful blossoms.
Another highlight of a visit to the New Orleans City Park Botanical Gardens, is the display of birdhouses depicting various architectural styles in and around New Orleans.
I think that most of the funky birdhouses hanging in the Botanical Gardens were the creative work of artist Ryan Ballad. For more information see: Ryan Ballard.
I say most only because some of the smaller ones were hanging in a different part of the garden and seemed to have a glossier style and finish.
