Watkins Glen’s Gorge, Watkins Glen, NY
We were visiting folks in Elmira, New York and took a short trip north to the south end of Seneca Lake and hiked up into the Watkins Glen’s Gorge. The gorge rises about 500 feet from the parking lot entrance and contains a series of cataracts, grottoes and caverns where water has eroded away the sedimentary rock faces. In the lower section of the gorge there are some excellent examples of the power of the water and the nature of the layered sedimentary rock in this region of the country.
