From my understanding, a hit is 1 point, broken lance is 2 points and unseating is worth big points 5 and generally a jeering crowd.
Afterwards the ground is littered with broken lances pieces which the knights dutifully clean up and try to sell to the crowd… the money raised goes directly to the care of the horses, so its for a good cause.
