New England Trip 2012 – Day 6 – Old Saybrook, Connecticut

We had stayed overnight in Old Saybrook and then in the morning we traveled North along the Connecticut River to Essex, CT. looking for colorful leaves and quaint old houses.

After looking at and photographing many interesting sights in Essex, we returned to Old Saybrook for another look around Fort Saybrook Monument Park in the daylight. (Click on image to enlarge)

Old Saybook is situated at the mouth of the Connecticut River where it opens out into the Atlantic Ocean and over the years has served as an important seaport and railway terminus.  At the Fort Saybrook Monument Park, there is no longer a fort but there are the remnants of the old railway roundhouse on display.  I found the site to be most interesting since it is not often that one gets to see how rails atop large stones could be put to this railroad use.

As we headed out to the highway again, I made one last stop to photograph a fabulous tree across from the New Church of Christ and its pumpkin patch offerings.
