Carleton University’s Annual Butterfly Show, October 1-10, 2011

Carleton University’s Annual Butterfly Show, October 1-10, 2011

Well, it is that time of year again. Carleton University’s Biology Department opens their greenhouse doors to the public this weekend for the popular annual live Butterfly Show. The butterflies fly free in the greenhouses under the watchful eye of the greenhouse manager, Ed Bruggink .

The public are welcome to come and visit from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from October 1, 2011 until October 10th, 2011 (Thanksgiving weekend) in the Nesbitt Biology Building, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario. Admission is free. Donations are always welcome.

This year’s 10-day show will feature 1,300 butterflies that arrive in five separate shipments representing 41 different species worldwide – double the number from last year.

UPDATE:

More than 11,000 people visited the greenhouse on the west side of Carleton’s campus for last year’s show. My advice would be to visit the greenhouses early since, by the Thanksgiving Weekend, line-ups are a strong possibility.

There is a pull-off zone directly in front of the greenhouses but this area is for DROP-OFF ONLY during the ten days of the Butterfly Show.

Last year was a great show and I took lots of butterfly photos.  With many new species on display this year, I’m certain that I’ll come back more than once with camera in hand.  Want to see what last year was like?  Take a look at any or all of my blog entries from the Carleton University Butterfly Show 2010:
