African Safari – Masai Mara – Evening safari

This was our last evening safari on the Masai Mara and we were still hoping to locate that elusive Leopard or one of the rare Black Rhinos. We didn’t see either of those, but did manage to see a few more elephants and another lion or two and added another bird species to our ever-growing list.

Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida meleagris)

Buff-crested Bustard (Eupodotis ruficrista)

Two male and two female Ostrich were watching over about twenty young ones and keeping a wary eye on us as our van approached.

When two private vehicles sped along the road close to the elephants, the elephants were spooked and immediately moved into a defensive circle with the young ones inside the circle protected by the older elephants defending the outer ring. Interesting to see but scary at the same time!

With darkness coming down around us, we headed back to the lodge.
