Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society – Annual GIANT Auction – 2010

At their monthly meetings, the members of the Ottawa Valley Aquarium Society (OVAS) get a chance to bid on a number of aquarium hobby related items – fish, plants, tanks, books, etc. They call these the ‘monthly mini auctions’. Then, once a year, they really take the aquarium auction process to a whole new level with their Annual GIANT Auction.

For long-time members, the annual event is a time to renew old acquaintances, to dispose of a few items not being used in the present fish room set-up, or to put that hand up to bid for that lonely item that will really be welcome in its new home :-).

The day begins with empty tables that slowly get filled to overflowing with all sorts of interesting items as sellers arrive, items get tagged and registered and the whole OVAS ANNUAL GIANT AUCTION machine shifts into high gear.

Of course, potential buyers start as soon as they can to examine the items, make their secret list of desired items and before long the space between tables gets a bit congested..

As the bell is rung, potential buyers head for their seats and wait for their items to come to the auction area and sellers wonder who will buy their no longer needed piece of driftwood, that extra aquarium or that no longer needed plant or crop of fish.

All day long, hands go up and hour after hour the 1,000 or so items find new owners.

At the end of the day you hope that you sold as much as you bought or maybe a bit more, or you’ve saved a bundle on some special item that you really needed ….

Whatever the outcome, the diehard attendees at the OVAS ANNUAL GIANT AUCTION almost immediately begin planning on how they will be better prepared for the next annual get together !!!
